Launched in 1990 by joint MDs Gina Fucci and Jeanne Thompson, the company’s ethos centres on curiosity, creativity and questioning. All underpinned by a respect for everyone, everywhere.

Our rolling new talent initiatives ensure we find and develop the best new talent available. In 2021 we transferred the company to an Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) and rewarded our loyal team of expert collaborators by transforming them into shareholders.

We have delivered 1000’s of hours of content since launch and are approved suppliers for the major streaming platforms and channels worldwide. We pride ourselves on cultivating responsiveness and driving innovation. As a result, our kit rental and post production facilities contribute to award-winning content filmed and broadcast across genres, at every scale, all over the world.

2023 New Dolby Atmos and ADR Facility

Our innovation and response to a changing world continues with the opening of a brand new, state of the art facility on Cotham Hill offering a specialist ADR studio and an impressive additional Dolby Atmos theatre in a spacious and relaxed environment. It’s the building with the Inkie mural, you can’t miss it.

 

2023 Lens Testing for Scripted Productions

Our commitment to drama continues. We now offer lens testing and collimation at our Bottle Yard Studios site, in addition to Digital Dailies and DIT services. This specialist facility enables Camera Assistants and DOPS to confirm distance accuracy, before they start filming.

2022 A Top 10 UK Post Production Facility

In the years Televisual Facilities 50 survey, we reach 4th in the Peer Poll and 7th in the National Top 10. Alongside another Best Post Production House nomination at the Broadcast Awards, we continue to be recognised by the industry for our commitment to excellence that elevates us beyond that of a regional indie.

2021 New Location for our Equipment Rental Department opens at Clifton Heights

Having outgrown their home of 30 years on Cotham Hill, our rental team move to Clifton Heights where our large and spacious new equipment rental facility provides a comfortable environment for clients to test kit, chat and explore options with our team of experts.

2021 Enterprise Management Incentive (EMI) Scheme

Films at 59 transitions to an Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) placing the company into employee ownership.

2020 Theatrical Premiere ‘David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet’

Thirty years after our first Attenborough commentary record, Sir David Attenborough records A Life on Our Planet. This feature length Netflix documentary premiered in cinemas and we were honoured to complete all post production on his powerful account of humanity’s impact on nature and message of hope for the future.

2020 Introducing Clifton Heights

With inspiring views of the city our Clifton Heights edit facility was designed to provide productions of all sizes with a comfortable, modern and secure environment that includes meeting rooms and break-out spaces.

2019 Bottle Yard Drama Rental Opens

Responding to the huge increase in locally filmed dramas we opened a rental facility in the heart of The Bottle Yard Studios, the largest film and TV studio in the West of England.

2018 Winning Best Post House at the BROADCAST Awards

Having been a finalist 10 times, we were finally recognised as the UKs leading Post Production House, and first Regional winner – a very proud moment!

2016 Brockley  – Foley and ADR Studios

Our specialist Foley and ADR studio opened its doors in 2016. This dedicated space, based in a Sixteenth century farm building with thick stone walls, provides a creative space with superb acoustic isolation.

2014 First UK Post House to adopt Avid S6 Audio Control Surface

Our commitment to new technology continued as we adopted Avid Pro Tools with the Avid S6 audio console providing agile workflows to facilitate increasingly integrated and complex projects.

2011 Cardiff Expansion

When Casualty moved production from Bristol to Cardiff we were delighted to move with it. Our Cardiff facility was born and we continued to support the Roath Lock studios with cameras for Dr Who and Upstairs Downstairs amongst others.

2011 Digital Intermediate Grading Suite Opens

With a 4 metre screen and a 2K Barco grading projector our DI suite was a significant investment in our future. We have been developing our sophisticated DI workflows following the success of the Disney Nature’s African Cats ever since.

2009 Edit Suite on Kilimanjaro

Another first for Films at 59 when we set up an edit facility on Mount Kilimanjaro to support Kilimanjaro: The Big Red Nose Climb that raised an amazing £3.5 million pounds for Comic Relief

2006 RDF Television (West) – ‘Dickinson’s Real Deal’

Since its launch in 2006 we are proud to have delivered over 1000 episodes of this iconic series!

2004 Our first Chinese New Year Party

Christmas has always been a very busy in our business, so in 2004 we replaced the mulled wine evening with a Chinese New Year Party for staff and clients to enter the year auspiciously!

2003 Acquisition of Pink House Post Production

We acquire our neighbours and competitors to bring their craft talent, expertise and clients to the Films family.

2002 EDL Hacker is Launched

Our gift to the world, this in-house creation was free to use and became a trusted tool of users worldwide in the management of all things EDL!

2000 High Definition, A Future Secured

Building on a decade of success in audio post production the new millennium saw a significant expansion of our ambitions with the opening of the first High Definition picture post suite in the UK.

1998 The Bookings Database

Google may well have launched in this year but Films at 59 released its internally developed management system ‘The Database’ that gave us bespoke scheduling, finance and asset management capabilities.

1992 ‘Casualty’ Kit Supply

Films at 59 begins supplying equipment for ‘Casualty’, the world’s longest running medical drama that first hit our screens in 1986.

1990 The Birth of Films at 59 Hire and Audio Post

1990 was a tumultuous year: interest rates were 17%, dot com bubbles were bursting daily and a group of people set out to save an audio business with an important booking – the commentary record for David Attenborough’s third BBC natural history series. They succeed and ‘The Trials of Life’ broadcast on BBC One, 3 October 1990.
